People think the container (MP4, MOV, WEBM…) changes the sound quality.
Truth: It almost never does — but there are huge differences in compatibility and file size.
Container = the "box" (MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM)
Codec = the actual audio inside the box (AAC, Opus, MP3…)
| Format | Best Audio Codec Inside | File Size (same 5-min song) | Compatibility | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WEBM | Opus (best codec) | ~9.8 MB | Chrome, Firefox, Android | Best quality/size |
| MP4 | AAC | ~11.2 MB | Every device on Earth | Best compatibility |
| MKV | Any (can hold anything) | ~11.5 MB | PC, Android, VLC | Most flexible |
| MOV | AAC or PCM | ~12–60 MB | Apple ecosystem | Biggest files |
Stick with MP4 + AAC 320 kbps (or Opus if you only use Android/Chrome).
You get:
- Maximum compatibility
- Tiny file size
- Excellent quality
- Works everywhere
Stop overthinking containers — just convert and enjoy.
